September 2008

Ramiro Canovas named the Most Valuable Player of the 2008 season.

Ramiro Canovas, the leading goalscorer of Atlanta FC during the 2008 season with nine goals, was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2008 season. His excellent campaign began with a beautiful goal in the opening match of the season against the Rocket City United and with a hat trick to beat the two-time Region III champions of the US Open Cup, Dallas Roma FC, at the regional finals in Jacksonville, FL.

"Ramiro is the perfect representative of Atlanta FC. His commitment to the project had no limits and he always set a great example inside and outside the stadium for everyone and always was a positive leader. Other players contributed a great deal like Ramiro, but certainly all agree that he deserves this distinction, "said Ricardo Montoya, Technical Director of Atlanta FC.

Luis Sandoval and Robert Munilla were named by the National Premier Soccer League in their nomination of the best 40 players of the 2008 season. Montoya said, "The nomination of both players is not surprising, Robert Munilla is a symbol of soccer in Atlanta and an extraordinary player, he is greatly respected and he always conveys humility, wisdom and is a great example to all members of the club. In the case of Luis Sandoval, he had a major involvement in the season and played very well, he is a player who is understanding his role and has improved his level of play over the last two years.”

Montoya also said, “I'm most surprised by the exclusion of Paul Buckley in this list, Paul was a very consistent and versatile player, was a key in our team for his high level of play and overall effort."

Atlanta FC resume their activities and conducts all its training Thursday nights at Riverwood High School from 8:30 PM and is preparing a reserve team to participate in friendlies in the month of November against teams from Alabama, Tennessee, and North Carolina. Atlanta FC will participate in National Premier Soccer League next season in 2009 and it intends to participate locally in the Georgia Soccer League with a reserve team beginning in October. The reserve team will keep players fit during the offseason and allow the coaching staff to observe new talent.

In order to defend its Championship of the Southeastern Conference of the National Premier Soccer League, Atlanta FC will begin its official preseason during the early months of 2009.
